It was just a frickin' balloon!

So, a child released a small balloon from his backyard today and everyone in the entire civilized world went batshit crazy for several hours.

You know, I think Nena was on to something here:

  1. Bob - did you know about the military exercise that'll be running in this region this weekend? I posted details.

  2. The media thought that they had a 'child in the well' story, with a real twist. If there had been a rescue attempt, what could be better tv?

  4. Nina Hagen is indeed awesome.

But I was talking about "Nena", aka Gabriele Kerner, who did that song about a bunch of balloons accidentally triggering a nuclear war.

  5. Yeah...she was the one-hit wonder of the early 90's or late 80's with the son 99 luftbaloons ("99 ballons in the air").

It was a West German hit originally, as I recall.

  6. Wow, I didn't know that. I feel pretty sheepish about now. I must learn more about this, thanks.

  7. to West Haven Bob:

In USA only, she was allowed two hits- 99 and New York New York, elsewhere on our beautiful planet she is far bigger. Here, the industry was banking on Madonna.

Bet you never got to enjoy this:

  8. LZ, not to worry. And that was a cool video you linked.

Nena also did an album of cover songs a few years back ("Cover Me", I think it was called) and I actually have her version of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" on my MP3 player.
