A Nation of Whiners

"We have sort of become a nation of whiners. You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness."
Former Sen. Phil Gramm uttered those immortal (immoral?) words last week when referring to Americans who talk about our economic woes, and he was unceremoniously fired as the co-chair of John McCain's campaign. The campaign tried to downplay the termination during a Friday night news dump, which is typically used when people don't want their bad news to get the full attention of the MSM.

Fortunately, that's why we're here.

Bloggers work nights and weekends. Those are our favorite times, actually.

ConnecticutMan1 over at Drinking Liberally in New Milford has been busy dissecting the affair, and he's come to some startling conclusions about Gramm's firing, for which the "Nation of Whiners" comment may have only been a convenient justification. "Gramm is a vice-chairman of UBS Investment Bank." Interesting. Click on the link above and give it a read.

"Phil Gramm's America"

Still, having someone who has benefited greatly from our nation over the years, both personally and financially, and who used to be in a position of authority and power, to have him dismiss the very real suffering of Americans he was supposed to represent is both condescending and despicable.

The economy IS tanking, despite what this ridiculously wealthy old man says or wants you to believe. The hopeful disregard of the situation by people like Sen. Gramm won't solve the problem. We don't need to be told that there is no problem.

We need solutions. Solutions that start with people who are willing to face the hard realities and make bold moves to rebuild our broken economy.

Is that too much to ask of our elected leaders who inevitably become extremely wealthy as a result of the trust the American people show for them?

UPDATE: An absolutely unrelated note, this blog has quietly topped the 400,000 visit mark over the weekend. Thanks for stopping by!

It is nice to know that a guy with about 10 times the traffic (on average) checks my own little corner of the net once in a while. Needless to say, Bob, thanks for the link... Yeah, I said it anyways. :)
