Help Wanted: State Rep. Candidate

Today longtime Democratic Representative and House Speaker James A. Amann announced he was stepping down after his term is complete, ostensibly to enable him to run for governor unhindered by political conflicts. Amann served the General Assembly honorably for 18 years.

So that leaves us here in the 118th Assembly District (Milford) with an opening for a Democrat to run for the soon to be vacant seat. The search is on!

Of course, quite a few of my so-called "friends" have been calling me incessantly since the news broke a couple hours ago. Just so there's no question about where I stand, here's a representative example:
Me: Hello.

Helpful "Friend": Hey Bob, did you hear about Jim Amann?

Me: Yeah, only about five times in the last hour! That was unexpected, huh?

HF: I know! It came totally out of the blue!

Me: Well, it makes sense, since he's probably going to run full-time for governor now. We should get right to it and find someone to run in his place.

HF: Absolutely. So, how about it?

Me: How about what?

HF: You should totally run!

Me: WHAT!?!

HF: Yeah Bob, it'd be great! Think of all the fun it would be having "Connecticut Bob" on the ballot! We can make some awesome T-shirts and bumper stickers! C'mon, do it!

Me: No way! Nope! No fucking chance! I'd rather chew on crushed glass and wash it down with Draino than run for office! The very idea literally makes my skin crawl! Am I clear on this?

HF: (long pause) So...you're not ruling it out entirely, then?

Me: (CLICK)

The article in the Register said that he was not going to run for Speaker of the House again. He is not giving up being a state rep.

Maybe the Register said that, but in his speech to the Assembly today he was quoted as saying he wouldn't seek re-election in November.

Ah yes, I see the updates. So I guess when Granny cleans his clock, he'll be on the loose in Milford, maybe hanging at the Dunkin Donuts. Scary.

Even the Gov is talkin' about CT Bob and his co-conspirators:

"I am crushed to learn of the Speaker's impending retirement,'' Rell said in a statement. "The General Assembly is losing one of its most dynamic voices and the people of Milford one of their staunchest advocates. I wish him well in all - nearly all - of his future endeavors.''

The remark about being "crushed'' was a reference to a well-known clash between Amann and others at a train station - played often on the YouTube video website - that he would "crush'' anyone who dared to run against him for office in his hometown of Milford.

I got a huge kick out of Rell's "crushed" comment. Very funny and appropriate use of the word. Kudos to her on that one.
