Over the last year or so, the mainstream media has been trumpeting the "Tea Party Movement" and giving their extremist views with racist undertones ridiculous amounts of publicity; while providing little or no coverage of the Left's views on the national debate.
So a few forward-thinking activists decided to inject some common sense and reasoning into the dialog with this new movement. And the National Coffee Party was born!
The simple mission statement (from their website) is this:
The Coffee Party Movement gives voice to Americans who want to see cooperation in government. We recognize that the federal government is not the enemy of the people, but the expression of our collective will, and that we must participate in the democratic process in order to address the challenges that we face as Americans. As voters and grassroots volunteers, we will support leaders who work toward positive solutions, and hold accountable those who obstruct them.In other words, be part of the solution, not part of the problem!
Having come up with the concept, it was a simple matter of spreading the word, and networking with like-minded individuals via Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and of course, their website CoffeePartyUSA.com.
Imagine how refreshing it will be for a group of involved citizens to meet up and calmly discuss the issues and possible solutions, without nutjob extremists screaming nonsense and making it resemble a rally from a Leni Reifenstal movie! (can you guess to whom I'm referring?)
I'm looking forward to seeing the results of the many Coffee Parties scheduled around the nation. Take a look at their map to see what's scheduled for Saturday. A brief look at their Google map of Coffee Parties around the nation only turns up one that's happening in Connecticut on Saturday, a gathering in Sandy Hook with details viewable here.
I'm thinking that if this thing catches on, there's a really great coffee shop here in Milford with free wifi and lots of yummy treats, and I'm sure they'd love to have a group of constructive and intelligent people enjoy an evening of discussion and fun there! If you think this is a good idea, email me or leave a comment and if I get a good response, I'll organize it for later this month.
PS - Notice how I got through an entire post without saying "Tea Baggers" even once? I'm so proud of myself. It makes me wonder what the wingnuts are gonna call us. I'll bet they're working overtime right now trying to think of something clever, like "Coffee beaners", or "Java garglers", or even "CappucciNuts"...
...Nah, I don't think they're that clever!

And the odds of the MSM showing up to cover a coffee-klatch are . . . ?
It'll take a lot of brewed beans to get stoked up enough to match the TP crazies.

Well, it was front-paged today on CNN.com. That's how I heard of it.
Ah, it was gone before I got to CNN. Dateline is for 10:17 am. I usually don't hit the news sites until after lunch. The article makes it sound like a bunch of nice people.
So, is this a gathering for progressives who want to avoid the Drinking Liberally meet-ups, on account of sobriety issues?
Just asking.

I'll be attending the 2 different meetings near where I am located today, and I wouldn't have even known about it if it were not for CT Bob's article. So, thanks a bunch! Really looking forward to this.
To oldswede- count on the MSM not to be there unless it's to gather material for a hit-piece. Remember Operation Mockingbird...
To CT Bob- I bet you would make a great host for your area. You've taken the first step already with this article on your blog.
To all- Each time I post a comment here I leave a little "Easter Egg" for you if you click on my name...
I think your already acting and speaking with a poor political voice by saying the "tea Party" members are "wingnuts' and suggesting that your intelligent and they are not.
I'm not saying I'm all that intelligent, but...
"your" does not = "you're"
Jus' sayin'.
OS - I think the Coffee Party has a potentially wider appeal than Drinking Liberally, which is a fine group in it's own right.
Kids are more likely to attend ("kids" meaning the under 21s), they can be scheduled anytime rather than the typical DL evening gatherings, and it's got the cachet of being something "new", which may help it snowball into a real movement.
But I'll wait and see how today goes before I venture an opinion on their success.
Err, wake up call "Kids".
Date Line St. Louis:
On Wednesday morning, 2,225 patriots turned out at the “Kill the Bill” rally in St. Charles, Missouri.
They were expecting 600…… But, 2,225 turned out.
Today, local liberals held their second Coffee Party to push for more socialism.
30 people turned out… Including the people who were already at the restaurant and the tea party infiltrators.
Yeah, that ASTROTURFFING CNN and he "Like" are having a bit of and issue.

JTHM,
It must be nice to live in such a simple world where your side is 'patriots' and the other is 'socialists'.
Get a brain.

JTHM,
I did a little digging on that St Charles item you flogged. Only the rightwingnuts are screeching about a 'kill the bill' rally. That is in their imagination.
The St Louis Post-Dispatch's local news source noted "a Republican forum on health care is planned for that morning.
"Here’s everything you need to know about the day:
"Republican forum
"Doors open at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Charles Convention Center for U.S. Rep. Todd Akin’s video teleconference.
"Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, Akin, other U.S. Congress, state and local leaders will speak from 10-11 a.m. about how the health care bill would affect their budgets.
"The health care town hall is free and open to the public."
Nothing about it being an anti-Obama rally. Nothing at all.
oldswede
They were once known as the Koolaiders. ;-)
Swede you've shown nothing, nada, zilch. The fact remains that although the Tea Party Patriots were accused of being an astroturfed ( ie: made up faction organized by Republican Party Operatives) but as it turns out that was and is a bogus claim.
The St.Louis Rally did draw over 2200 and all the denials you claim fall flat.
Futhermore, why did you not dispute the link about CNN and the actual Astrotured Coffee crap? Ohhhh I know, I know that would be to difficult...
30 people at the Coffee Party in St. Louis heheh, can't wait to see the CT chapter. What is it going to be, You, that dope from Drink Liberally , Bob and a handful of misfit wannbes? LOL!
November can't get here soon enough. The squeals of horror are going to be priceless. :)
Notice how orderly and peacful they are no rioting, looting, vandalism, attacks of police or pedestrians unlike what we saw in the anti-WTO protests in SEATTLE and GREENPEACE or the arrests of SEIU thugs in DC the other day.
Just say'n heh.
JTHM,
Are you illiterate? This St Charles event was a Republican party forum.
Got that, Republican.
Once more - Republican Party.
They only attack innocent countries.

Just when I thought with the repudiation of the tea partiers in the TX primaries, (despite Perry's win, the undertickets were a rejection of the tea party) that fringe politics were dying. Here comes the lefty version of foolishness.
It will be the left's version of the "disagree with us even slightly and you be an enemy" form of politics.
But perhaps that is actually good, as the center, center right and center left will be motivated to take back the political process and over a couple of election cycles, get politics back to some semblance of real governance.
It's time for fair minded people to reject the ideological purity tests the wingnuts in both parties push at the cost of good government.
I understand what you're saying, but if they stick with their mission statement I quoted in the article they're probably on the right track. We'll see...
Skeptical, but hoping.
I think the country is tired of the histrionics by both sides' fringe wings.
I do NOT believe they are opposed to true liberal goals (or with true conservative goals, for that matter); they simply despise the political posturing and hypocrisy of both sides.
To that, people tend to agree with many of the stated goals of the various Tea Party groups, but they don't trust their leaders' sincerity.
