This Cannot Stand -- Local Media Can't Cover Debate

This from the Hartford Courant this AM, regarding the next Senate debate:
The Hartford CBS affiliate has banned representatives of the news media - other than its own - from Wednesday's 3 p.m. taping of the debate that is to be moderated by national CBS newsman Bob Schieffer before an audience of specially invited guests at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts.

After a news blackout of 27 hours, WFSB plans to show the canned one-hour event Thursday at 7 p.m.

"We're renting the hall, it's our debate, and we'll invite who we want to invite" - that was Channel 3's position, as paraphrased by Richard Foley, campaign manager for Republican candidate Alan Schlesinger. Polls show Schlesinger running a distant third in the race, and so, Foley said, "we feel that we cannot make too many demands."

He noted that the full day's delay would enable any candidate who had "a Gerald Ford moment" - a reference to Ford's notorious 1976 misstatement that Poland was not Soviet-dominated - to cook up a face-saving explanation even before his gaffe goes on the air Thursday. "You could be un-spinning it ... before you even spin it."
I am available and was planning to cover the debate. Time to let WFSB know what you think of their ban on local media:

Billboard up in CT Today

This billboard went up today on I-95. Sponsored by an interfaith group here in CT -- their Web site has a nice summary of how Joe's vote in the Senate legalized torture. Bravo that people of faith in CT are speaking out.

And ye of little faith -- everybody has advice for how the Lamont campaign should be run. Hang on a couple of more days until Joe's full 3rd quarter disclosure forms are out -- that will be quite a read.

Lieberman attacks Ned; ignores Alan

Fun debate today. Here's some observations:

Did anyone else notice how Joe Lieberman started the debate with a charge that Lamont was going to attack him BEFORE Ned even opened his mouth?

Did that strike you as kind of...strange? Like, he's trying SO HARD to prove his agenda that Lamont is a negative campaigner that Joe preemptively attacked Ned? Really odd.

And then tonight I went to the joe2006 blog...hey, that's what I'm paid for (...well, I WOULD be paid for it if I did this for money) and saw the latest entry in that wonderful and entertaining blog.

The thing that seemed a little funny was this...if you'd missed the debate and only happened to read Joe's account of it, you wouldn't have even KNOWN that Alan Schlesinger was there!

Yeah, Alan "The Lieber-beater" Schlesinger apparently escaped Joe's blogmeister's notice. Must'a slipped through the cracks.

So, if you only get your news from joe2006, you'd see that Alan Schlesinger was nowhere to be found, and that Joe somehow overcame his dismal performance against Ned and WON THE DEBATE!

Yeah, well, we all know that joe2006 is "Fantasyland". And a magical land it is, where Joe reigns supreme and Free Speech is outlawed. Paradise, it is, for Joe.

But if you want some REAL Free Speech, drop by the Joe 2006 Blog page I set up, and comment freely on Lieberman's escape from reality.

Because unlike Joe Lieberman, I'm a big fan of the Constitution, and I think it's a good idea to dust it off and take it out for a spin every once in a while.

Lessons Learned Behind the Scenes

If I drank a lot, I would be under the table by now. What a day it was! Very interesting from a number of angles.

1. The media decides what the story will be in advance.. I know this is no newsflash, but I really was surprised at how conspiratorial the national media is -- throughout the place today. This is the Lamont-Lieberman race, and they don't want to have to deal with a third candidate -- (whaah -- too much work! We have the Ned/Joe story down pat). The initial reaction was to dismiss Alan as a cartoon -- they were doing the same thing that was done to Dean. Tomorrow's morning papers will be the most interesting -- to see if as they talked to more people, and realized that Alan scored the most points.

2. Joe Blows. The Lamont rally owned the front of the hotel. There was one gal with a Schlesinger sign. Alan walked in the front way -- proudly (see nbc30.com if you can find Monahan's story from the 6pm) Joe slinked in the back door -- he couldn't have missed the kiss float, but didn't have the guts to walk in the front door. Metaphorical, isn't it?

3. Joe's scared. Immediately afterward, when the media was swarming Ned and Al-mentum, Joe came running up the back stairs. Those were the stairs between the press room where I was perched and the ballroom, and the doors were propped open for the TV wiring. There were heated voices in the staircase between Joe and "his people" on the way up. I didn't have video to catch him on the stairs, and as if by providence, Spazeboy appeared, and I told him Joe had just gone up the stairs. After just a few minutes, they came barreling back down the stairs (maybe Joe needed the little boy's room in their rented room upstairs? Who the hell knows. He has to take 6 people to the bathroom?) As Spazeboy said -- what was amazing is that Joe beat it out of the ballroom and actually left the cameras! Joe was clearly annoyed that we caught him == yet again. He got blindsided and it showed. And Joe didn't like it one bit.

4. When Connecticut Progressive Bloggers work together, amazing things happen.. I've said it before, there is no better group: Spazeboy, Caffeinated Geek Girl, CTBlogger got it done today. In fact, I was driving home while Spazeboy was working on the staircase video in the passenger seat -- with his wireless access and power adapter plugged in while I drove. Not to mention DeanFan84 and CTKeith who ushered in the return of the KISS float.

5. Polls in this race are worthless. There is no way Alan is in single digits, when internal polling shows 20% of likely voters plan to vote straight-line Republican. I said it before, and I will keep saying it -- Joe is ahead by name recognition. A lot of people are not paying attention, and it will not dawn on them until they get in the booth and see Ned on the D line and Alan on the R line.

6. Ned is Ned.And bottom line, that's why we love him. No, he's not the polished pol who makes it all look as easy as water falling off a duck's back. He is not going to change in the next 3 weeks, but the good news is we're not getting the Joe patented bait-and-switch either. Ned is so very personable one-on-one -- he made his points, and jumped on Joe in his Ned way. Now is not the time to become disillusioned.

7. Local news is waking up. All 4 stories I saw tonight on the network affiliates were fair and balanced and not the suck-ups to Lieberman they usually are. Maybe they finally smell the blood in the water.

Who knows what will happen in the next 3 weeks? Who thought we would be here with this Republican circular firing squad of the last month?

Keep the faith.

Spazeboy asks Joe "The Question"

This is the quintessential "Joe" moment!

Being faced with a video camera and not having a squad of paid handlers there to control the situation is Joe's nightmare. Spazeboy took the initiative and had his question loaded and ready to fire when the moment was right.

“Would you unequivocally caucus with the Democrats?”

Watching Joe scurrying like a crab down the stairs, trying to escape the harsh glare of reality, I almost expected him to pull his coat over his head like a Mafia "don" leaving court after a hearing. Surreal.

The reviews are coming in!

And they look great for Ned!

Here's an ABC News commentary on the debate:
"I'm running against a career politician who says, 'Stay the course,'" said Lamont, echoing the anti-war mantra that propelled him to victory in the August primary. "It's time for us now to redeploy our forces."

Trailing in the polls, Lamont hit back at Lieberman's charge that he's a running a negative campaign.

"It's not negative to say we've got to change course in Iraq," Lamont said.
And Paul Bass of the New Haven Independent had this to say about Alan Schlesinger:
The ghost of Crazy Eddie was channeled Monday by a man who would be Connecticut's next senator -- and whose name is neither Lieberman nor Lamont.

[...]

So Schlesinger came out swinging -- literally, with his hands at times -- when he finally got to debate his two opponents in a televised debate. He injected a new factor into the race. Lieberman sought to focus attention, and criticism, on Lamont, his closest rival. But Schlesinger pounced on them both throughout the debate, and sought to establish himself as the conservative alternative to two "liberal Democrats."

Kiss float is back! And Kirby rocks the Toobz!

What a day! Not only did our very own Kirby do an awesome job live-blogging the debate, but the Kiss Float is back on the road (not a moment too soon, either!) Here's Spazeboy with Joe Lieberman's favorite parade float.

And afterwards, Joe Lieberman was seen fleeing the debate so fast, his car wasn't parked long enough in the handicapped spot to get a ticket! So it wasn't a total disaster for him.

Ned handled himself well in the face of Joe's repeated attacks, and when Joe's time ran out, he was given carte blanche.

(Does "Carte Blanche" even exist anymore? I think I may have to update my metaphors. Hmmm..."Ned was given a Diner's Club card"?...nope, that doesn't work either...)

Kirby rocked the intertoobz today with her amazing work. Please give her some props in the comments section!

Recap part 2

Overall, I think Schlesinger helped himself the most -- by getting fair time to talk and present himself to his Republican constituents. I think he will get a big bump out of this one.

Ned was fine. Ned is who he is, he stayed on message and was sensible.

Joe was the usual Joe.

AK into her cell phone: Schlesinger is a nut case -- yelling and screaming -- between the other two, a draw -- Schlesinger took the pressure off -- sidebar the fact that they didn't talk about Iraq.

Schlesinger was entertaining, and he did set himself apart. He could be a fun profile.

We're leaving -- more later.
