Send Karl Rove to Jail dot com

Former Bush aide Karl Rove, aka "The Teflon Turd Blossom", may be headed to a heapin' helpin' of legal troubles if he continues with his refusal to comply with the subpoena and testify before Congress.

"Executive Privilege" ends when you leave the White House, if you're the President. Of course, Rove wasn't the President, or even an elected official. He worked as an adviser to Bush, and his only out will be if Bush gives him a pardon before they hold him in contempt of Congress and jail him.

Bush may use a bunch of pardons between now and January 2009, but there's one pardon that won't help him because it doesn't exist; the pardon that will exclude George W. Bush from prosecution after he leaves office.

A President can't pardon yourself.

If the election goes against the Rs, as expected, Bushie could resign in December, Then Ol' Deadeye, his own pardon pocketed, could issue one for shrub. Remember Nixon and Ford.

I do remember Nixon and Ford. That's the reason why I lambasted Ford when everyone else was praising him after he died. People forget these things unless they're reminded.

Your scenario is one that's occurred to me, too. But I think that if Bush tried to pull something like that, it would destroy the Republican party for decades. They'd never be able to wash away that stink no matter how much they tried.

Besides, I think Bush is too much of an egoist to resign like that. He's concerned about his "place in history" and his future library at SMU. He'll serve out his term and fight any sort of legal hassles later. He's not too bright, you know.

I think you underestimate the power of the Republican mythologizing machinery. Nixon is well on his way to rehabilitation. Even dim, vicious old Ronald Reagan is presented as one of the greatest presidents ever.
Once Bush is out, the process would begin and all of our memories of this catastrophic time will be altered. It is all Clinton's fault, you know. That and the vindictive Democrats in Congress. Bush will be made to look like a hero for stepping down to save the country from further damage by vengeful liberals.
