Now the chess match begins. I thought all along this was an option if the Senate was iffy -- give the job to Joe (who won't say no to Bush) and then our Republican governor, Jodi Rell, gets to name Joe's replacement -- and I guarantee it won't be Alan Schlesinger (if only!)
Right now, Tester declared victory in MT, and at a noon press conference, Joe said he talked with Harry Reid about his chairmanship in the new Senate. Currently, it is 49 R, 48 D 1 undecided (VA) and 2 "independents". We know Bernie Saunders will caucus with Democrats, which makes it 49, 49, 1 and 1. If Joe goes D, Webb or Allen will be the deciding vote. But, who wants to wait that long (recount probably through Christmas -- all the 2000 election lawyers are already jetting in).
So, if Joe goes to Defense, and Rell puts in someone like, oh, maybe Nancy Johnson (who got creamed last night after 12 terms) that brings it to R 50, D 49 and Virgina. It gives Cheney the tie-breaking vote and even if Webb wins....
Talking heads are already talking about Lieberman as a leading candidate....stay tuned.

too bad for you and the black helicopter crowd.... Bob Gates is nominee for new SECDEF
Hey ned_op, your boy won. Congrats.
Now will you please fuck off?
I am convinced Bush planned the announcement for today & the only question was would it be Joe or Gates. Had Joe lost last night he would've gotten repaid by Bush/Cheney today and been named Rumsfeld's replacement. Since Joe got to keep his paycheck, seniority, and status now he doesn't have to worry about actually working and can stay right where he is.
Oh, there's NO doubt whatsoever that Bush's timing was political in nature; and besides that, it proved him a liar when he only just said that Rummy would serve out his appointment.
Gee, Bush lies to us. Why ain't I surprised?
Though I doubt he would have appointed Joe had he lost; even though Joe's been a great help to the Conservative agenda, they don't really LIKE him! They'd much rather have a solid Repuke appointed then a former Democrat current Indie.
Nobody trusts a turncoat...they can always turn again.
true b.a. about those turncoats. Are you perhaps thinking of doing an online petition or blogger action asking Reid not to appoint the turncoat to a chair? In all seriousness sure in the big picture we want the dems to have real ability to shape as much policy as possible. But doesn't letting Joe have any power defeat that purpose? I'd say let him keep seniority and caucus with dems but not chair any committees. Period. If he doesn't like it what is he going to do? Caucus with reps? So the heck what - with him the result is the same no matter what "side" he's on with an issue isn't determined by party principle.
There are already movements afoot to prevent Joe from getting anything from the Dems.
The discussions in the Senate will start when they return to session, but already there is a push to examine Joe's likelyhood of getting anything.
Plus, there are ongoing FEC investigations into his campaign. Hopefully, Joe will be too busy being deposed in courthouses to caucus with the Repubs.
good, thanks. And when he's brought down by scandals and the true shaningans of his campaign come to light let's hope the media and everyone refers to him as "Indep. Joe" not "Dem Joe". Ashamed to live in the state of CT. today.
Don't be ashamed...we picked up two more Democratic House seats, and contributed to the solid Dem majority. We all did this.
Ned was brave enough to start it, even knowing he was a huge underdog; what he did was fuel a revolution. Whether he got elected or not, we've won because of his voice.
I'm with ya : Ashamed to live in the state of CT. today...
I called my sister in Virginia today,to chide her about Senator Macaca getting such a big part of the cracker vote.. her retort? "well your state reelected the LieberFreak". Touche, Virginia. Touche.
I hang my head in shame. People in this state are deluded.
